THE WINDOW COMPROMISING!
Bus number 482 was on its way to Santacruz station. The sweltering afternoon let sweat trickle down the forehead , making the palms clammy. Renita just couldn't bear the scorching sun.She hurriedly opened the window beside her with a loud thud. She gave out a sigh of relief and started fanning her face with a newspaper. She relaxed herself as the cool wind passed gently over her cheeks.
Rohit , a kind-hearted avid reader , was sitting behind Renita , engrossed in his book. The unhindered wind gushed inside , making the pages of his book flip continuously as the bus ran.Rohit's utter single-minded concentration was now disturbed! He was at the verge of solving the intensive investigation on a murder mystery with Sherlock Holmes when the wind blew away.It was like a naughty child messed up all your document papers and scattered them on the floor.Unfortunately ,Rohit lost his track!
He gently closed the window beside Renita and got back to find the page he was reading.Renita was busy enjoying the cool breeze with her eyes shut when suddenly the supply of air halted. She opened her eyes with a perplexed expression to see that the window was closed. She opened it with the same intensity.Again the same flipping of the pages.
Rohit closed the window unspoken.Renita once again opened the window beside her with the same energy but now with a louder thud.It was as if she was wanting to say-"Let me see what he does next!I will handle it.Beware".Rohit didn't give up.He kept closing the window and she kept opening it.The only difference was that the sound of opening the window was getting louder. Each time Renita felt that she was right and was proudly suppressing someone behind him.The other passengers behaved indifferently and assumed that a fierce and unceasing silent battle was proceeding between the two.
The dreadful opening and closing persisted for a long time when intolerance was endurable.Passive aggression shot up.Finally Renita , infuriated and irritated , opened the window with a bang!It was so loud amid the traffic horns that even the curious bus driver looked back for a second , whispering to the conductor-"What happened!?" Everyone gazed at Renita.
A few seconds passed.A few minutes passed. There was no signal and sign of closing the window.Disturbing silence fell.Renita felt no movement from behind. She could just hear the rapid flipping of pages. She turned back for the first time to see that a man was painstakingly trying to read a book in the moving bus with his fingers stuck on upper-end of the page to prevent it from turning.
She turned as guilt concealed her.He isn't able to read the book properly.I can get some cool air from the window in front of me to.I should have kept it closed.I should have settled down first.
Renita kindly closed the window beside her.Unoticed by everyone except one.Rohit gave a small grateful smile.
Sometimes compromising is not so demanding , bad or expecting to much from us, isn't it!? You never know how you unknowingly reap the benefits of compromising.Don't let guilt change your actions.
"Compromising is not about losing. It is about deciding that the other person has just as much right to be happy with the end result as you do "-Donna Martini
